Sarojini Nagar set for Multistorey Apartments

There is big gap between demand and supply of residential apartments for government officials in Delhi. Now, Government’s multistory apartments will also have Type VIII flats which are only meant for senior babus . Sarojini Nagar, a colony of government servants in the Capital, is set to witness one of the biggest redevelopments in the shape of high- rise apartments having sprawling Type VIII flats.

A total area of about 300 acres in the heart of the city adjoining sites like AIIMS, Dilli Haat and INA has been earmarked for the project. Officials said it is for the first time that any multistorey apartment will have Type VIII quarters. In recent years, Delhi has seen vertical regeneration of many government colonies, including Moti Bagh and East Kidwai Nagar, but these colonies don’t have Type VIII flats in multistory apartments. In the Sarojini Nagar project, officials said, one whole floor will be devoted for one Type VIII flat.

According to the plan chalked out by the Ministry of Urban Development ( MoUD), the government’ residential colony of Sarojini Nagar will witness multistorey residential towers compris- ing around 9,500 residential units besides 1.87 lakh sq mt of commercial space in that area. The project will be executed by the Central Public Works Department ( CPWD) at an estimated cost of ` 12,000 crore. According to the MoUD officials, there are 30 such government colonies across the city and Sarojini Nagar is the biggest of them to be developed.

They said the government is also looking to redevelop some other government colonies such as Srinivaspuri, RK Puram, Netaji Nagar and Mohammadpur. “ Traffic study and environment impact study of the project is in process,” said a senior official.

MoUD officials said 30 such colonies occupy around 1,100 hectares of prime real estate and their redevelopment will certainly ease the acute space pressure.

Currently, the whole area of Sarojini Nagar residential colony has about 4,700 flats where officials of various departments reside. In the developed form, the area will have multistory apartments of 7- 14 floors. These apartments will consist of flats ranging from Type III to Type VIII, which are meant for secretary level officers at the Centre.

Officials said the upcoming project will be having all the modern facilities like power back- up, schools, cycling and jogging tracks, shopping centre, milk and vegetable booth, ATMs, banking, sewerage treatment plant.
